German For Adults
It’s never too late to learn German.
And it might be the best thing you do for yourself.
My German lessons for adults are online, one-on-one and built around your goals. Some of my adult students have always dreamed of learning another language. Some want to reconnect with their family’s roots, or talk with German-speaking in-laws and grandchildren. Others are preparing for a Goethe, telc or TestDaF exam to study or work in a German-speaking country.
Why are you learning German?
“I’ve always wanted to learn another language.”
For the love of languages
You’ve always wanted to learn another language and you’re finally making time for it? Wonderful. My German lessons for adults start wherever you are, at your pace, with lessons that mix conversation, grammar and culture, so every week you can see your progress.
- Everyday conversation from the very first lessons
- Grammar explained clearly, without the stress
- Culture, travel and life in German-speaking countries
“My family has German roots.”
Reconnecting with your roots
Your family’s story began in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, but the language got lost along the way? Lessons help you discover the language and culture of your parents, grandparents and ancestors, so you can talk with your German relatives and feel at home when you visit.
- The language and culture behind your family story
- Talking with relatives in their own language
- Feeling at home when you visit
“Our daughter’s partner is German.”
Talking with your German family
When your child’s partner comes from a German-speaking family, a whole new family comes with them. Starting early helps you talk with their family, understand celebrations and traditions, and one day share words and stories with your grandchildren.
- Conversations for family visits and video calls
- German you can share with your grandchildren
- Traditions, celebrations and everyday family life
“I want to keep my mind sharp.”
A workout for your brain
Learning a language later in life is one of the best workouts for your brain. It builds new connections, keeps memory and attention active, and research shows it helps keep the mind sharp and healthy as we age.
- Relaxed, unhurried lessons at your pace
- Varied activities, games and conversation
- New words, new ideas and a lot of good conversation

Goethe-Zertifikat
A1 – C2
The best-known German certificate worldwide, accepted for work, study and visas.
The right books for the exam
For exam preparation, we work with course books written specifically for the Goethe and telc exams by the leading German publishers Hueber and Klett. You practise exactly the task types you’ll meet on exam day, at the right level, so nothing comes as a surprise.
I add my own explanations, speaking practice and detailed feedback on your writing, so you know where you stand before you book the exam.
Flexible and personal
If you’re learning for travel, family or simply the joy of it, German lessons for adults are all about you: conversation, the grammar you need, and the topics you love, from history and culture to travel and everyday life.
Reading out loud is a big part of my lessons. It trains the same muscles and pathways as speaking, so German soon starts to feel natural.
What adult learners say
“Nadia really is an outstanding tutor. I started lessons with her over 6 years ago, and her enthusiasm, knowledge of, and passion for German is genuinely inspiring. Whatever your interest or reason for learning, Nadia creates interesting and enjoyable lessons for every subject. Her friendly and outgoing nature encourages you to continue and to believe in yourself, and her ability to explain some of the more complex concepts in easily understandable language is a huge asset. Nadia is also very flexible and tailors lessons to your interests, gladly spending more time on a concept if you want. I originally reached out to Nadia after feeling a bit lost using online apps to learn German, and under her guidance I learnt far above and beyond what I thought I would be capable of. Our lessons have been a fantastic mix of conversational German, grammar, culture, and thought-provoking subjects all while in an encouraging environment in which you not only learn but understand. I honestly can’t recommend Nadia enough, a wonderful teacher and a wonderful person as well.”
“Nadia is an excellent German teacher. She is very patient and understanding, and provides her students with plenty of time and space to practice articulating themselves. Nadia has an extraordinary grasp of the rules which govern the grammar of the German language and is able to explain these in a way which makes sense to the student. She’s not one to shirk from a laugh or an interesting conversation, which definitely adds great value to all her lessons.”
“My friend and I have been learning German with Nadia for several years. Nadia is an enthusiastic teacher who doesn’t just focus on the necessary grammar, punctuation and speaking but also teaches us about German culture in her fun and stimulating lessons. She is very flexible and patient and always takes a lot of trouble setting and marking homework. I would highly recommend Nadia if like us you want to learn the language and be confident to communicate with the locals in Germany.”

German lessons for adults: good to know
Am I too old to learn German?
Not at all. Some of my students start in their sixties and seventies. Adults often learn grammar faster than children, because they can see the patterns. All it takes is curiosity and a little regular practice.
I’ve never learnt a language before. Where do we start?
Right at the beginning, at level A1. We build up step by step, with lots of speaking from the start, so you never feel lost.
Which exam do I need?
It depends on your goal. Universities usually ask for TestDaF, DSH or a Goethe C1 certificate. Employers and visa applications often ask for B1 or B2. In the free phone consultation, we work out which exam and level you need.
How long does it take to reach the next level?
That depends on your starting point, how often you have lessons and how much you practise in between. I’ll give you a realistic plan once I know your level and your exam date.
Do I need to buy books?
Yes, a course book for your level by Hueber or Klett, and I’ll recommend the right one for you: a book designed for exam preparation if you’re working towards a certificate, or one focused on conversation and everyday German if you’re learning for travel, family or fun. I add my own activities and materials on top.
When are lessons?
During the day and in the evenings. Lessons before 3pm are $60 + GST, which suits retirees and anyone with flexible hours. All lessons are online via Microsoft Teams, so you can join from anywhere in the world.
