Structurewerden (conjugated) + Infinitiv at the end of the clause
Ich werde morgen einkaufen gehen.I will go shopping tomorrow.
Du wirst sicher viel Spaß haben. You will surely have a lot of fun.
Sie werden bald eine neue Arbeit finden. They will soon find a new job.
⚠ Word orderThe Infinitiv always goes to the END of the clause — just like in modal verb sentences.
2

werden + Partizip II — the actor is not the focus
▲
German ExpressionFunction / Meaning
Structurewerden (conjugated) + Partizip II at the end of the clause
Das Haus wird gebaut. The house is being built. (We don’t say who’s building it.)
Die Grammatik wird erklärt.The grammar is being explained.
Eine neue Brücke wird gebaut.A new bridge is being built.
Das Haus ist gebaut worden. The house has been built. → Perfekt passive uses worden (NOT geworden!).
⚠ TipThe passive shifts focus from the person acting to what is happening. Very common in formal writing, news, and exam texts.
3
Vollverb — Veränderung & Entwicklung
werden alone — becoming, changing, developing
▲
German ExpressionFunction / Meaning
Structurewerden (conjugated) + adjective or noun — no second verb needed
Er wird Arzt.He is becoming a doctor. (He’s not one yet, but he’s on his way.)
Das Wetter wird besser. The weather is getting better.
Es wird kälter. It is getting colder.
Paul wird groß.Paul is growing tall.
Er ist Arzt geworden. He has become a doctor. → Perfekt of Vollverb uses geworden.
⚠ TipThis use of werden does NOT need a Partizip II or Infinitiv — just werden + adjective or noun to express change. In the Perfekt: ist … geworden.
